President's Message
How does one start to recognize every individual who visits this website? I for one am humbled by the opportunity to offer this message of greetings hope and vision to you, the new and returning students of the SUNY Oswego community. Those of you returning have fond memories of programs, clubs, concerts, and friends and of course what seemed to be the never ending construction in the heart of our home. Our patience and support have reinvigorated our dedication, spirit and involvement towards the goal of bringing the campus to life and to bring life to our campus. Those of you who have just begun the journey here at Oswego have much to look forward to. As you will learn from your new friends, professors and campus surroundings, this experience will offer you the opportunity to challenge yourself to achieve great things and push yourself further then you ever thought you could. The Student Association at SUNY Oswego is here to support you in this endeavor. Through our various organizations, events, services and departments; I personally would like to offer you the support you may need in achieving the goal all students have, which is to learn the skills necessary to succeed in your future. We all have fears that challenge our ability to achieve our dreams, it is my goal to lend you the hand, advice or strength you may need to make these fears a memory of yesterday as we grow into tomorrow. In order to recognize every individual who visits this website we must open our minds to the variety of cultures, backgrounds and futures we inevitably all will share. Welcome to the Student Association where your adventure begins.

Come stop by and visit me in the “The Point” the new home to student organizations located in 101-Campus Center.

You may be wondering what ways there are to get involved and how exactly your student government is organized. The Student Association is the primary student governmental organization here on campus. We have numerous resources for students to use if they have any concerns or suggestions. The Student Association works with the administration of the college to promote what you foresee as the right direction for our institution to take. Do you want to take part in the discussions about parking here on campus? Are you interested in entering the discussion about new residence halls to be built? How about influencing the policies of the campus? If any of this sounds interesting, then contact the Student Association or email me personally at jmiller6@oswego.edu and we will help you be party to the discussion.

Our primary function is to collect the $88 student activity fee all students pay. Your student activity fee enables the Student Association to execute a budget of $1.4 million dollars. This is disbursed in the form of operating budgets, services and funding opportunities for nearly 100 clubs and organizations. The student-run television programs on WTOP, the concerts and lectures provided by SAPB, the regattas that the Crew Club participates in, as well as all the other programs and events that are sponsored by Student Association organizations are made possible by only your Student Association and involvement from dedicated students like you.

Do you want to influence how clubs and organizations operating budgets are constructed? Would you like to be part of an organization that has the power to represent student's needs and act as the comprehensive voice of the student body? Then, I encourage you to run for a Senate seat within the Legislative Branch of the Student Association. We have seats available from every residence hall that will allow you to represent the needs of your local constituency in the Senate. Are you an off-campus student? Make sure that your voice is heard and your concerns are known; we encourage you to run for one of our 19 off-campus senate seats! Have the senate seats from your residence hall been filled up? Don't think that doesn't mean you can't get involved with the Senate. We have added 9 additional "at-large" Senate seats; this will give up to 9 students the opportunity to represent the needs and concerns of the entire student body here at SUNY Oswego. Contact the Student Association office for more information.

Continuing this semester College Hour will take place from 12:45-2:05 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no classes during this time. This is to provide a programming and meeting time for students during the middle of the day. The college hour impacts the lives of all members of our campus. Be sure to take part in the various events and opportunities this hour has to offer.

I look forward to meeting many of you and shaping the future of this institution with your help. My goal is to make your college experience richer through involvement and interaction.

"Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation."
